A reason to get gussied up

Contra dancing is not some odd new form of country line dancing. In fact, you most likely wont hear any Nashville hat and hair act act supplying music for this. Contra dancing is, actually, much older and some might say even more fun. It has been said that, a contra dance is much like an theme park ride we alllow for ourselves.

Taos has already established an energetic contra dance community for a long time. This Saturday (12 ,. 13) in the San Geronimo Lodge in Caon, theyre wearing their fifth annual Contra Dance Ball and everyones asked.

The festivities begin at 7 p.m. with guest caller Richard Wilson from Santa Fe. Among activities planned are a Grand March, contra dances, waltzes, polkas, the Varsoviana, and other ballroom favorites.

Since this is a ball, fancy dress outfits is recommended, however this being Taos which means, whatever suits your fancy,  stated organizer Jim Buechler.

According to a definition found at www.sbcds.org, Contra dancing happens in sets. A collection includes two lines, with your partner usually across from you in the other line. The set is subdivided into minor sets, which nowadays usually contain two couples  The minor set dances once with the dance. Each couple moves onto a brand new couple, forming new minor sets, and repeats the dance  The dances are carried out to reside music, usually reels or jigs.

At the Contra Ball, music will be provided by the fabulous Taos Contra Band.

Buechler stated the dances aren't difficult which instruction will be presented. Because many are associated with Taoss wealthy history, he said this is a way to touch base with our past.

Potluck refreshments are encouraged. Admission is $8 per dancer, or $15 per couple. Children under age 12 have the freedom. The San Geronimo Lodge is situated at 1101 Witt Road in Caon. To learn more call (575) 770-0569.
